from Chinatown Merchants and Community Partners
Our Chinatown Clean Ambassador Shirley speaks 6 languages, and was previously a merchant on 8th Street.
Chinatown Improvement has helped transform this whole intersection. It used to look messy and unattractive to customers. Now it is spacious and organized, safe to walk with beautiful and meaningful art on the walls. Now the corner is the pride of the area.
Thank you to Clean Ambassador Sakone. He does a great job of helping us keep our storefronts clean and organized. Chinatown has looked bad for so long, we are very grateful.
Chinatown Improvement connected us to Fremont High School Woodworking Department to upgrade our plastic bins for sturdy wood produce stands that make our storefront look incredible. We were so surprised and proud of the stands. We are also very proud of the students who made Chinatown look better for all our customers!
Chinatown Clean Ambassadors helped me understand how my storefront appearance attracts graffiti taggers. They worked with us to clean off windows we had painted over because we were tired of non-stop graffiti. Now our business looks more lively and clean. Very grateful to them!
Thanks to Chinatown Improvement for giving merchants a voice with City government. They connected us directly with our Councilmember to bring important issues to light and share our viewpoints and struggles. They have been a constructive voice in ongoing encroachment and recycling issues all Chinatown markets face. Now 8th and Webster looks so much better and more walkable. We look forward to working more in the future with them to help Chinatown grow all its businesses.
We are currently a business outside of their pilot zone, but we can’t wait to work with Chinatown Improvement. They understand that Chinatown needs to work together to grow together. They have community spirit, business savvy and creative expertise to help Chinatown grow.
Chinatown Improvement helped our long term vacancy attract a great tenant after many years of vacancy and blight. They worked with us to restore our badly-tagged facade, add public artwork and lighting at night, and facilitated tenant improvements that made the property more appealing to a great new tenant. We strongly support more Chinatown Improvement projects like this in the future.
Chinatown Improvement has been an invaluable partner as our congregation engages in visioning and strategic planning. The vital information, insights, and connections provided by the Initiative have spurred our conversations about community engagement and meaningful partnerships in the current context as well as in the Oakland Chinatown of the future.
Chinatown Improvement understands that the cultural heart of Chinatown lies in its public parks and spaces. We appreciate their strong support in celebrating and highlighting Lincoln Square Park, Madison Park and the Chinatown Library as vital regional centers for Asian culture.
